Military Change-of-Command & Retirement: U.S. Navy at the Pentagon

Updated: Aug 2, 2021

Fair Winds and Following Seas” is a heartfelt phrase of good luck and goodbye to those who will be missed, a phrase shared with sailors who have served with honor and courage. This change-of-ceremony was conducted in the same spirit—well wishes and thanks yous to Captain Hicks for a job well done as the U.S. Navy Chief of Information.

The U.S. Navy Office of Information honors the legacies of its leadership with a wall of portraits. Each admiral or captain who served as the office's chief has the honor of gracing its walls. I had the honor of capturing this special ceremony. The Pentagon isn't known for its aesthetics, but the military is known for its centuries of tradition. Following suit, the service branches do what they can to liven up their hallways and office spaces with our histories and heroes. Though I am partial to Revolutionary history, walls like this are an incredible reminder of the people who have committed their lives to the service of America.

Captain Hicks was joined by his appreciative colleagues and loving family to celebrate his retirement from uniformed service and exciting transition into the civilian workforce after an accomplished career with the U.S. Navy across many posts, deployments, and duty stations.
